REDD, the gap Lacandon and new forms of dispossession

REDD, the gap Lacandon and new forms of dispossession

Silvia Ribeiro * Based on an agreement between the governments of Chiapas and California, in collaboration with institutions and El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (Ecosur) and transnational conservation, moving in Chiapas called REDD projects, which mean the privatization of the air of forests, depriving communities of their right to inhabit the territory.

To define what you can sell carbon indulgences to the government of California and polluting industries that support it, the administration tries Chiapas, like other previous decades, open a gap in the Lacandon Jungle to delimit the area to market by renewing attacks and remains to indigenous communities. In March 2011, state government officials said the organization Justice Global Ecological ( www.globaljusticeecology.org ) that lack only bridge the gap in the area of the canyons, "where Zapatista communities."

precisely, the attempt of demarcation in the Lacandon area four decades ago in favor of one of the seven indigenous peoples who inhabit what motivated the creation of a union of all the other peoples of the region against "the gap Lacandon "interwoven with the source resistance of the EZLN.

In 1971, the government granted 614 000 321 hectares of forest to 66 community members "Lacandon" (not his original name, and are not original inhabitants of that region), exacerbating the chaos of overlapping land titles that already existed in the region. Never marked the boundaries (the gap resistance prevented it), but since then the Lacandon are those who sign the consent to projects and contracts submitted to them by the government, are timber, tourism or as now, REDD. The other communities were displaced or live under permanent threat.

REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation avoided) is supposedly a program to prevent the emission of greenhouse gases caused by deforestation, paying carbon credits to companies to deforest a little less. Or the communities, so that foreign technicians were certified to do a management plan, which in practice means they can not use the forest and lose autonomy over the territory.

Businesses have a tremendous business, because they can continue to pollute and also part of the bonds sell at a higher price to other companies. In other words, it costs them nothing and fun environmental laws. On April 7, 2011, Greenpeace International published a report denouncing Bad Influence how the international consultancy McKinsey, which has a long history of advising privatization and now advises countries that want to get money from REDD-had made a calculation base for distorted the governments of Guyana and Congo, to show a prospect of future deforestation far greater than real. In this way, might even increase further deforestation and REDD charge, claiming that this deforested less than projected.

In the case of "payment" to communities in Mexico there are concrete examples that can cause stripping of these schemes, and that payments for forest environmental services are based on similar mechanisms. With the excuse of "pay" a modest communities to "protect the forest" actually been deprived of land management. In Oaxaca, there are cases where the term of the contract Payment for environmental services (five years), the government declared their territories "protected natural areas or priority areas for environmental services, extending the contracts for 30 years against the will of the community. Unable to use their forest, which is the basis of their traditional livelihoods, they must go to survive, though they remain the property titles.

is part of what we want to do in the jungles and forests of Chiapas: sell to corporations the carbon absorbed by forests and to give guarantees in this business, leave the forest communities, ideally moving them to thicken other government business : calls "sustainable rural towns." Displaced and uprooted, with no services and livelihood, the generous offer of the government of Chiapas is that they are pawns in the plantations for "biofuels."

REDD projects in Mexico are not formally defined as such, but the governor Juan Sabines and began paying a select community members to show their determination to establish a good base for multinationals California businesses with public funds. Also meet requirements needed "technical", such as creating a "baseline" of vegetation and a projection of future changes in land use and "biomass" and then power say that there was "less" deforestation, or whatever reason, to "absorb carbon dioxide." In these exercises will assist institutions as Ecosur and Graduate School, and a national committee REDD +, where Conafor, CONABIO, SEMARNAT and other federal government agencies, with carbon traders and business organizations that promote conservation and biodiversity.

To define the capacity of carbon sequestration, is using satellite technology combined with hyperspectral photographs and direct monitoring of some areas (for which community members are already training). Results are obtained and well defined, no only wildlife but also the humans who are there, which is a basis for monitoring all communities and also for the next generation biopiracy.

Broken Capillary In Breat

Mexico, murdered the peasant ecologist Javier Torres Cruz.

murdered PRESS RELEASE the peasant ecologist Javier Torres Cruz in a place near the community of La Morena, the Sierra de Petatlán, Guerrero.

Javier Torres Cruz was a community leader who had fought narco-cacique of the area and their Rogaciano Alva Alvarez groups of gunmen and was a key witness in the murder investigation of human rights defender Digna Ochoa y Placido.

In December 2008 he was detained, kidnapped, tortured and disappeared for 10 days by members of the Mexican Army members from 19 Infantry Battalion, and from that date was under constant threats and intimidation by the military.

Yesterday, Monday April 18, 2011 at 5:30 pm, was assassinated by a group of armed peasant ecologist Javier Torres Cruz, 30 years old, Torres Cruz was killed as he walked by a place known as "Puerto de la Mosca" place near the community of La Morena where Javier lived with his family.
According to information provided by relatives of Javier and some eyewitnesses, a group of gunmen attacked treacherously to Javier who was traveling with his brother Felipe Torres, who was injured in this attack, when passing through the said place, "Puerto de la Mosca" is located and has been designated as the place of operation of a group of assassins in the service of Rogaciano Alva Alvarez who are known as "The Arreola" belonging to the family of that name.
This attack against Javier Torres lies within a series of other attacks, threats and intimidation against him since 2007 when he decided to testify before the Attorney General of the Federal District to identify those responsible for the murder of human rights defender Digna Ochoa y Plácido murdered in 2001, following that statement and his public denunciation rail against the atrocities and violations committed by the narco-cacique Rogaciano Alva Alvarez, and his work as an ecologist in the region, both military and civil armed forces conducted a series of attacks that ended the day yesterday with his death.
Importantly, the period of 10 days remained missing Javier Torres Cross 1 to 10 December 2008, during which he was tortured and threatened with death by soldiers belonging to 19th Infantry Battalion of the Mexican Army who according to him outside Torres "acted for the people of Rogaciano", disappearances and torture that was never investigated by the competent authorities.
Other facts relating to threats against Javier was located in 2009 when at least 6 separate occasions, elements of the army entered the community of La Morena Javier family assaulting and threatening him with death, all these violations and incursions were reported on time, but to date the competent authority has solved a case.
Aggression latest and perhaps the most serious before the murder of Javier, is located 16 February 2010 when again the Mexican Army broke into the nearby community of La Morena opened fire on men and women working in the field at that time, being killed and wounded Adolfo Torres Isa Torres Rosas Rosas (both cousins of Javier), arbitrarily and unjustly detaining Anselmo Torres Quiroz (grandfather of Javier) and Huber Vega Correa (family friend) the latter two remain to this day unjustly imprisoned in the prison of Acapulco for alleged crimes against health, to them manufactured by the military in its incursion.
These facts were reported and an investigation is currently open in the military prosecutor in the Av Prev 27ZM/16/2010 to determine responsibility and punish the soldiers who fired from behind a group of unarmed men and women farmers.
In all these facts are two constants, the use of force and violence by armed civilians and military against Javier Torres Cruz and his family, and the ominous complicity of the state and federal authorities investigate and punish those responsible .
The assassination of campesino ecologist Javier Torres Cruz, can not go unpunished for what it represents, for having had the strength, courage and community support to denounce the abuses and atrocities of the narco-cacique Rogaciano Alva Alvarez and have confronted and denounced military abuses are committed in the Sierra de Petatlán for many years.
The Guerrero state government must act immediately to collect the evidence and the evidence needed to arrest, disarm and demobilize the group known as "The Arreola" who act under orders of the chief of the criminal group imprisoned in the maximum security prison the Altiplano.
This assassination will do the knowledge of the Human Rights Commission, National Commission of Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner for UN Human Rights in Mexico and all those civil organizations of human rights defenders continue to demand punishment for those responsible, an end to impunity and end to military abuses in Guerrero and Mexico.

Coincidentally, the presentation of the documentary took place in the 50 th anniversary of the invasion Bay of Pigs, the CIA sent a force of anti-Cuban exiles to overthrow the Cuban Revolution. The invasion was defeated in what is known as the Victoria de Girón, but 50 years later, this documentary shows that the violence that promotes and supports the United States against Cuba has continued for decades.
The film includes interviews with notorious terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch, José Basulto and other members of the notorious anti-Cuban mafia in Miami.

The hype around this event, led to 8 interviews on various radio stations and a local newspaper (Media Coverage ). For the first time, a local TV channel Univision did an interview about the film and publicized the event. El Tecolote, a San Francisco newspaper interviewed Saul Landau and the article was published on 6 April.

The evening began with music from the Cuban Cowboys whose style is a blend of traditional music and rebellion.

The half-hour of entertainment of this renowned musical group was received with enthusiasm by the audience. One of the songs, "El Danzon Ninety Mile" was written by the group's director, Jorge Navarro, specifically for the documentary "For the True Terrorist Please stand up!"

Alicia Jrapko, International Committee to Free the 5, welcomed the audience and thanked Saul Landau great contribution for making this documentary. "To all who are involved in the fight for freedom for the Cuban 5, the documentary is an important tool to explain the reasons for these five men come to the U.S.," said Jrapko.

After an hour and twenty minutes of this captivating film, the lights and Danny Glover, the beloved actor and activist took the stage in front of a resounding applause. He presented a philosophical and inspiring speech about how the rule is destroying the planet, which is on the verge of collapse. A particularly poignant moment of his presentation was when he mentioned that along with Saul Landau, has had the honor to visit Gerardo Hernández, on three occasions.

Gerardo Glover described as an example of what it means to be human in the highest sense of the word. Saul Landau then answered a number of questions from the audience.

People were informed that only a few days ago, Luis Posada Carriles, responsible for the bombing of the Cuban airliner that killed 73 people and a series of terrorist actions against Cuba, was acquitted by a jury in El Paso, Texas .

Why Do Guys Where Singlets

like mushrooms in autumn

Writer: Mario de los Santos

are there, the ride began in Independence, but are spreading out across the center like mushrooms in autumn. Are there with their colored jackets, blue, green, white, their faces of good people, and certainly are, stalking the sleeping conscience of the travelers.

During the fat years had never seen such organizations in the distribution of foreign aid from the English government, they are called non- (NGOs), send their recruiters on the street. If anything, a significant date, put a post where you gave many papers, we proposed to affiliate to your magazine and I offered a sponsorship of an Indian child or the purchase of fair trade cocoa controlled by an international body for approval. Did not walk the streets with the money boxes, such as women's fur coat that collected for the missions.

These NGOs did things differently. And it was precisely because the NGO had nothing. They were well-governmental and governmental organizations, which had an extensive staff of contract workers who were paid with funds received from aid State and European cooperation.

These NGOs did things differently

But now comes the crisis. Banks make a mental mess with subprime mortgages with pension funds in tropical islands, with investments from friends, insurers can not cope and the states have to drop the fly to keep the free market stall. So it is not hard for that international cooperation, and the gentlemen who work in these government organizations, blessed by the new catechism of solidarity, are suddenly living up to its name, unless required governmental 30% say less government as budget cuts. And with the partners they have, are enough to keep coordinators, expatriate managers, local and general secretaries, administrative, organizational ... well, normal in any business. So throw out his cohort of volunteers (who also is because NGOs are the only structures of self in which people live well and people paid a salary working for the face and content) to the streets to seek new partners . So, send those charged to non-paid work in order to continue collecting.

Or so I thought, anyway. Because the reality is cruel yet.

The other day I stopped a guy with a blue vest UNHCR (the UN agency for refugees), and I tell you what evil must walk around if the UN goes from the brush. When the boy finished explaining a world of color and fantasy, I wonder where the UN is funded and if the budget for military intervention as, say an example, in Somalia, or Afghanistan, or in Libya if relevant, is the same as refugees have the same conflict. He looks at me and returns with the same explanation as before, and I say that if I become a member of something, I wonder how long it takes the Korean who now makes general secretary of the case and the thousands of white guys, European or Yankees, who charge of history, and how much takes the bold African or Palestinian, or the Sahara, or the Colombian walk sleeping in the street. In the end, the boy looks at me, long hair, clothing, cheerful, hippy, it seems come from the refugee camps of Sabra and subtly tells me if I want, nothing happens, he's a Mandaa , who works for a company and giving both by subscription, if not mean to be a partner that well, but walking, that does not bundle, that time is gold.

much takes the bold African and the Colombian
goes sleeping
Street

That's when I die. Turns out they are not volunteers, who are workers, there is a company that charges to get the NGO partners, or whatever it is, pay to get NGO partners.

went home with some sadness, with something broken inside, like a piece of her had been dropped. I imagined tenders: become a member, we send a quarterly magazine and a piece of clothing worn by a refugee, and at the next corner another jacket, this time red, doctors interplanetary send you home a piece of gauze used in the cure of a Haitian with the collaboration of a world famous singer and committed, and the following corner a green vest offers the magazine, the piece of used clothing, gauze, now promotes a Jolivud actress, a bit of an Ethiopian famine and over you get a discount of 30% in the first six months of subscription.

I thought that solidarity was a vital commitment that stemmed from an identification with an injustice or a tragedy, or simply the situation of another human being. But mostly it was that a lifelong commitment, that to be called solidarity was necessary to commit the bread on your table, the time is short, freedom and even life. No one could be united and go unpunished. However, should no longer be so. Things progress: you can now be supportive drinking Coke, you can be supportive buying yogurt, buying sweets, buying bracelets, solidarity is a percentage of the final price, solidarity is bought and paste it as a badge on his lapel. Something must go wrong when we need to be supportive intermediaries.

strange belong to a generation, a generation for democracy means to buy what you want, a generation that believes a cultural agitator is a guy who writes a newspaper column, a generation for whom solidarity is a good marketing.

DIRECT ACTION AGAINST THE BANK

On Thursday April 7 Zaragoza Rhythms of Resistance held a nonviolent direct action in Ibercaja headquarters to denounce the responsibility of the financial sector in crisis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ0yC0AlvVc

About 45 people took part in the action that you can see from the attached link to the news and had the following statement:

The crisis we have not caused s WE ARE, l @ s @ s worker. And so far we have only paid s WE ARE: record numbers of unemployment, cuts in social and labor rights, elimination progressive social protection and public sector, foreclosures, depressed wages ...

The crisis has caused banks and financial speculation.
And it's time that their perpetrators will begin to pay.

Behind every bank and institution speculative are the names of those who have taken the steps that have destroyed the economy by its mere greed, lust lucrative and destructive. And those people are responsible. Begin to pay.

demand the prosecution of persons responsible for this crisis, as occurred in Iceland. They are the ones who pay their loss and their responsibility.

We demand the dismissal and disqualification of all those politicians who from their checkpoints have acted with negligence and complicity in allowing this embezzlement and socializing the losses, paying with money that is our loss of people and organizations that have speculated.

We demand the nationalization of banks, beginning with the savings banks because they have failed to surrender its social function speculation. Continuing along the banks, including large multinational banks that export the same set of speculation and destruction to other countries.

demand a nationalized banks and social that it will stimulate the economy and support the citizenship, not a private banking and capitalist business as usual used to speculate, to the collapse of the global economy and the enrichment of a few people by suffocation of a majority.

BANKING IS GUILTY OF CRISIS!
FOR A NEW AND SOCIAL nationalized bank!
BANKERS TO PRISON! RHYTHMS OF RESISTANCE

Western Sahara: we need a human rights mechanism in MINURSO

The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was established in 1991
to organize a referendum self-determination for the people of Western Sahara , following the agreement between the two sides of the conflict, the Polisario Front and the Government of Morocco .

The United Nations position is based on resolution 1514 (XV) of the UN, adopted in 1960, which addresses the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. The resolution states that "all peoples have the right to self determination."

The mandate of MINURSO is monitoring the ceasefire and to organize a free and fair referendum. However, unlike nearly all United Nations missions deployed by the world, MINURSO's mandate does not include a monitoring mechanism of human rights .

Last year, members of the Security Council to include a proposed UN human rights machinery in the mandate of MINURSO, but the proposal was rejected by one of the permanent members.

This Mission will be renewed in April 2011 by a new resolution. It is very important for people living in Western Sahara, the Security Council of United Nations including human rights monitoring in the mandate of MINURSO.

The inclusion of this mandate would represent an important step in addressing human rights violations both in the Western Sahara as in Tindouf camps.

The protests that are spread over North Africa and the Middle East highlight the importance of promoting human rights and end impunity. An independent monitoring mechanism for human rights would be very beneficial to the inhabitants of the area and for all parties to the conflict impicadas.

Demands that the English authorities to actively promote the inclusion of a human rights mechanism in MINURSO.

Tortured by Wikileaks cables

Dear friends,

The Wikileaks confidant, Bradley Manning, is being subjected to torture brutal U.S. military prison , as part of a broader strategy to silence and intimidate those who may be considering new leaks. Abuses on Manning have polarized positions within the U.S. government, and President Obama is very aware of its international reputation. A huge international outcry can do to end to torture:
Currently, the military confident of Wikileaks, Bradley Manning, is being subjected to brutal torture in a military prison in the United States. Kept in a situation of complete isolation can infuriate many people, Manning is forced to stand naked during certain periods of the day, and exposed to the taunts and insults from other inmates.

Manning is awaiting trial for having revealed secret military documents to Wikileaks - including video showing U.S. soldiers massacring Iraqi civilians. This cruel and inhuman treatment seems to be part of a campaign of intimidation aimed at silencing potential informants and continue the offensive against Wikileaks. This issue has generated conflicting positions within the U.S. government, with some diplomats openly criticized the military authorities for their treatment are giving Manning. But President Obama is being kept on the sidelines until now.

Obama is very careful of the international reputation of the United States. Now is when we show what is at stake here. Lift a huge global outcry asking the U.S. government to end the torture of Manning and obey the law. Sign the petition below, and our message is communicated through advertising and shares striking in Washington when we collect 250,000 signatures:

At least on paper, the United States is opposed to torture. The U.S. Constitution prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment." And he has signed, along with nearly 100 countries, an international convention that requires treat all prisoners "with humanity and respect for the inherent dignity of every human being." But right now, Bradley Manning is completely isolated in a cell, sleeping without blankets, and not even allowed to exercise. It is also being subjected to brutal humiliation that are generating serious mental harm. This violates the laws of the United States and International Law.

Bradley is being held under the program called 'prevention of injury', despite the 16 medical reports issued by military professionals recommend that you remove the harsh conditions of isolation that entails. His lawyers are doing everything possible to achieve in the courts, respect for human rights and fundamental constitutional rights. But today, the military court where your case and has in its hands the future of Bradley ignored the suffering that is submitted.

From the explosive revelation of the crimes of the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq, have been imposed repressive measures against Wikileaks. Many speculate that this relentless pressure on Bradley seeks to force him to implicate Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks. But Obama promised the American people and the whole world that he would protect rather than prosecute, the whistleblowers:

"Often the best source of information about waste, fraud and abuse of government is a public servant committed to public integrity and willing to talk. These acts of courage and patriotism, can sometimes save lives and save money for all taxpayers, should be promoted rather than suppressed. "

The cruel treatment which is suffering Bradley shows us the opposite, and sends a chilling message to all those who wish to disclose information of public interest. act quickly to put enormous international pressure for the U.S. government fulfills its commitment to respect human rights, protect informants, and put an end to this horrible and cruel treatment of its own citizens. Sign the petition and forward to everyone you know:

Bradley Manning is considered a patriot and admitted to spread some information because, in his view, the world had a right to know. People with common sense can disagree about the work and methods of Wikileaks, and right or wrong actions by those who gave them information. But in any case, the illegal torture of Bradley Manning is a shameful violation of their human rights and dignity as a person. Not to mention that Bradley has not yet had a fair trial, or been convicted of any crime. Hopefully

and determination,
